FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MUCH DO YOU LOCKSMITHS USUALLY CHARGE?
Simple prices for clarity. I charge £90 in normal working hours 09:00 - 17:00 and £120 outside of these hours. This covers you for all labour for your issue or job, whether it takes me 10 minutes or 10 hours. There are then charges for parts which varies from £10 to £210 and up, depending on what you need. Some items such as 3 star diamond grade locks are charged at a supply and fit rate (£120/lock). With this product, there is no labour charge. This will be explained once you make contact. There is no VAT to pay and no call out charges. If I don't solve your issues, no payment is due. No fix, no fee gauranteed.
WILL A LOCKSMITH RIP ME OFF?
There are two types of Locksmith to be wary of. The first you will often find on the top 3 results of Google Ads. These are often national companies that hire sub-contractors to complete work, without necessary training or experience. They are well known in the trade to over-charge and under-perform. The second to watch out for are "driller killers". They will drill every lock they encounter, to ensure they can charge you for a new lock, usually at a rip-off price. We always use non-destructive methods, and we will always persevere with this as our top priority.
HOW CAN I TELL IF A LOCKSMITH IS TRUSTWORTHY?
There are many people online claiming to be locksmiths. "Locksmith" is not a protected title and you do not need to be registered with a regulatory body. Most rogue locksmiths will not likely have a genuine website, so this is a great first filter. You can also check their Google Reviews, Checkatrade and Trustatrader. Websites like Checkatrade have a vetting process and require public liability insurance and proof of qualifications. Never trust anyone who cannot show you a website or online reviews. Always choose a local locksmith with genuine local connections. See this great youtube video from BBC Rogue Traders to understand.
WILL A LOCKSMITH CHARGE ME VAT, A CALL OUT FEE OR 'SAME DAY BOOKING' FEE?
We have seen customers charged £90 for a 'same day booking' fee; and we often hear about a surprise VAT charge never discussed until an invoice is produced. In our opinion, this is totally unreasonable and unfair. If you are quoted over the phone, always ask if there will be any VAT or any other charges added to that price. It is normal for prices to change whilst on the job, because of unforseen or undisclosed issues with locks or hardware.
